Glover: Ontario Place deserves better than a back-of-napkin approach

Published on April 13, 2023

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Chris Glover (Spadina – Fort York) issued the following statement in response to the Premier’s musings on moving the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place:

"The Premier’s comments earlier today, much like his entire plan for Ontario Place, were bizarre. This sort of back-of-the-napkin planning without any meaningful public consultation or even a conversation with the impacted communities is not uncommon for this government. They are once again avoiding accountability, transparency, and their responsibilities to the people of this province.

The Ontario Science Centre was one of the first interactive science museums in the world. It’s an important cultural institution and tourist attraction that supports many local good jobs in the Thorncliffe Park community. It deserves a lot better than Ford's pie-in-the-sky musings.

Let’s call this what it really is: a distraction from the fact that Ford wants to subsidize the construction of a private Austrian spa with $650 million of public money and prioritize corporate interests over public spaces for everyone’s benefit.

For this government to prioritize $650 million of public money towards a for-profit spa during the worst housing affordability crisis in generations shows how out of touch Ford’s Conservatives really are. The Ontario NDP has tabled practical solutions to help boost housing supply in this province. Yet, time and again, this government has said no, and then doubled down on their failing housing plan.”
