QUEEN’S PARK – Interim Official Opposition Leader Peter Tabuns released the following statement after the Ford government voted down the NDP motion to urgently address the hospitals and pediatric ICUs crisis:
“Alarm bells are ringing desperately across the province, especially in children’s hospitals. Pediatric ICUs like Sick Kids and CHEO are over-capacity and surgeries are being cancelled. It is absolutely devastating to see parents and children forced to wait in fear like this.
It is unconscionable that Doug Ford and Sylvia Jones refuse to acknowledge that our pediatric hospitals are in crisis.
Our motion today called for the government to make investments in our hospitals and launch a strategy to recruit and retain health care workers. For months, the NDP has been urging the Ford government to respect health care workers with measures including an immediate repeal of Bill 124; ensuring fair wages, benefits and incentives for health care workers to join and remain in the sector; and accelerating licensing for internationally-trained health care workers.
We need immediate action to ensure our children are safe and that hospitals are fully staffed across the province. What will it take for this government to finally address this crisis and do the right thing?”
