QUEEN'S PARK — Ontario NDP Leader Peter Tabuns and MPPs Jill Andrew (Toronto-St. Paul’s) and Laura Mae Lindo (Kitchener Centre) released the following statement on Kwanzaa:
"Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African heritage and culture focused on spending time with your family and community. This time is defined by seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (uplifting your community's economy together), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (to do as much as possible to leave our community better than when we inherited it), and Imani (faith).
The messages of Kwanzaa are beautiful -- rooted in solidarity, faith and belief. They remind us that what we are working towards is possible and can be achieved so long as we work together as a community. This is a message that resonates with activists and progressives, and one we can all meditate on and fill ourselves with for a brighter and stronger future for all Ontarians.
On behalf of the entire NDP Caucus, we wish everyone a very Happy Kwanzaa. May everyone be able to take this time to learn about African culture and heritage, and have faith that everything will work out okay."
